Chaka Khan | Hello Happiness – The mother of funk dropped a new album for the dance floor purists. Baiting us late summer with “Like Sugar,” she followed up with the jubilant mantra of the title track. A rousing song as freeing as her vocal range.
Ariana Grande | thank u, next – While I wasn’t a fan of sweetner and still roll my eyes at the sound of “7 rings,” I did prefer this project more. It feels more focused than the previous project with standouts like “NASA,” “In My Head” and the beautiful “ghostin.”
Kehlani | While We Wait – The last project I appreciated from the young songstress was You Should Be Here; another mixtape-esque predecessor before her proper debut. Her indie projects feel more focused and free of any cookie-cutter industry filler tracks. “Footsteps” is a gorgeous opening, setting you up for better offerings.
Yola | Walk Through Fire – If Roberta Flack created a folk-rock album (looking at you Billboard), it would sound like Yola’s easy-listening songs on love, loss and life. Her vocals are smooth, earthy and emote perfectly every lyric. Standout tracks include “Lonely the Night” & “Deep Blue Dream.”
