Trailer Things: Sisters are doing it for themselves in mob film #TheKitchen

The Kitchen sets the stage for a different kind of 70s mob film. Based on the graphic novel by Ollie Masters and illustrator Ming Doyle, Kitchen stars Elizabeth Moss, Melissa McCarthy and Tiffany Haddish as three matriarchs who seek to take over their husbands criminal enterprise once they face jail time. While it’s easy to compare this to last year’s Widows, this pushes the women as more than just victims of their spouses’ circumstances.

Coming off her dramatic turn in Can You Ever Forgive Me, Melissa looks to add another compelling role to her roster. Moss holds her own in the rebellious role, as she can be seen in Hulu’s Handmaid’s Tale next month. The wildcard, however, is Haddish, donning her first dramatic role. Given her comedic strength, I think Tiffany can deliver on the other end of the acting spectrum.

The Kitchen, directed by Andrea Berloff, arrives August 9th. It also stars Common, Margo Martindale and Annabella Sciorra.
